Friday, September 07, 2007:  According to a survey conducted by LINUX For You magazine, owing to the presence of some of the Linux/OSS biggies in the country, the Linux/OSS industry continues to grow at a healthy rate of 60 per cent, with a quarter of the players growing at a phenomenal rate greater than 100 per cent. With 55 per cent of the surveyed companies targeting 50 per cent plus growth and 30 per cent aiming for 100 per cent plus growth, the average growth in the ongoing financial year is expected to be 66.25 per cent.
The following verticals were identified as the key demand drivers in the Indian Linux/OSS industry:

1. Government
2. Banking and Financial Services Institutions (BFSI)
3. Manufacturing
4. Education
5. IT Industry

Though nowhere close to the top five, the telecom industry happens to be a notable consumer too. While the government continues to top the charts with 65 per cent of the respondents identifying it as the main source of their revenue, BFSI and manufacturing industries were not too far behind.

In all, it looks like this year too will be a good one for India’s Linux/OSS industry with an expected average growth rate of 66.25 per cent and the industry confident about the high-market potential. With a little cooperation from venture capitalists, educational institutions and the government, the picture might get rosier, and – though not mathematically possible – the optimism index might even surge to 100 per cent plus!
