Thursday, May 01, 2008:  CII-Shiksha, a non-profit initiative working with schools, colleges and other institutions to facilitate the process of shifting from information technology (IT) to educational technology (ET), recently launched a collection of free resources for class 9 in mathematics at New Delhi.
CII's Shiksha India Trust focusses on developing software for educational content; it aims to bring education equity by providing various technology tools to schools, free of cost. Adopting a mutually reinforcing two-pronged approach, CII-Shiksha has taken the road to Open Source philosophy. Realising the potential, Shiksha has partnered with various like-minded organisations to bringing more tools in to the schools and providing them with a creative and collaborative platform for teaching and learning.

As part of its Special Series on Integrating Open Source in Curriculum, CII-Shiksha undertook a 6-months pilot project with six schools of Delhi. Ten mathematics teachers from these six schools participated in the pilot and worked on GeoGebra -- an open source/free software for mathematics. The teachers created dynamic applets in geometry and algebra.

Around 40 such activities have been created by the participating teachers covering major portion of the 9th standard syllabus. This is the first time that the teachers have actually integrated open source in their curriculum. The resource would now be released under public domain by CII-Shiksha for use by any interested teacher or student. The resource would be hosted on Shiksha's portal: www.eshikshaindia.in.
