Saturday, October 11, 2008:  PC users have never had so many choices ever before. All you are stuck with is Microsoft's Windows XP, which is almost a decade old. Well, not a decade, but almost. And latest Vista -- it's just not working. So what should you do? You have been hearing a lot about Apple Mac, they look good, but everything is being controlled by Apple. The hardware, the software. Why can't your PC be like your apartment? Something you can customise according to your own needs. Something which is secure. Something which is not very expensive and you don't have to vacate your apartment every several years.
You must have been hearing a lot about GNU/Linux recently (some call it just Linux, but actual name is GNU/Linux). You must have also heard that its too complicated and it is not for home use. All that you hear is absolutely true, if it is coming from someone who hasn't actually used a GNU/Linux machine.

In last couple of years, GNU/Linux has emerged as one of the most dynamic operating systems. They are full of choices. They can run on almost any machine of the planet, no matter how old or new. There can be some issues with some machines, which do not support GNU/Linux systems because those companies are too small to support something as big as Linux, so the point is should you be trusting those vendors who sell machines which can not support GNU/Linux. If you do, you have already made a wrong choice. So, next time when you go out to buy any new hardware, always ask the shopkeeper if the hardware supports GNU/Linux or not, if it doesn't just don't buy it. Get the one which does support the latest technologies.

Now, is there any latest GNU/Linux based operating system which you can try, and what will be the cost. There are so many GNU/Linux-based operating systems which you can try, but the lastest one being Mandriva 2009. The cost: Zero rupee. How can you get it? Download directly for the site. And unlike Windows or Mac, you will be the legal owner of the operating system and you can also give it to your friends -- for free.

Another important thing, you will not have to worry about installing it on your machine just to see how it looks like. Just put the Live CD or DVD in the drive and restart your machine. Your new operating system will start right from the CD, without even touching your hard drive. If you find it cool, you can go ahead and install it permanently.

What will you be getting along with that? You will get a complete office suite, similar to MS Office, this one is called Open Office, and it comes for free. You also get GIMP, which is am image editor as powerful as Photoshop for home use. You will get the most powerful music player Amarok, movie player like VLC and Totem. For chatting with your friends, you will get one solution for all -- Pidgin, it will allow you to log into Gmail, Yahoo!, MSN and any supported chat programme through this single programme. There is much more for you to explore. But the best feature is no virus. If you start using GNU/Linux, one thing you will never have to worry about is viruses, Trojans, malware and any such dangerous stuff.

Well, don't you think instead of reading any further you should be downloading Mandriva 2009 and feel the fresh breeze after a 'decade' old operating system.

Note: You can get full set of instruction about how to master your self in using Mandriva, here. Trust me, you will find it easier than removing a virus from a Windows machine.

Very true. Completely agree with you Michael. But where do you think KDE 4.1 is trying ti immitate Windows? How is 3D desktop copying Windows. The reason Linux distrbution tends to look like Windows is to make it easier for long time Windows users to feel at home. A completely new interface. As far as looks are concerned, for last 2 years Linux has been working on drivers and it now has richer set of drivers than Windows. Mark has said that now the goal is look and feel and I trust within two years distributions like Ubuntu will beat pants off Mac OS.10/13/2008 9:00:41 AM

Another Windows wannabe. Instead of trying to be like Windows, why don't these developers and designers try and come up with something new? Never understood this. While it's great for those moving from Windows, none of the Linux distributions appeal to OS X users.10/12/2008 11:27:04 PM

No comparison with WIndows. You will not find a lot of good software for Linux. what will you do then?10/12/2008 9:23:43 AM

It is the best choice for a newbie desktop user, the bugs are minimal and the support better than zubuntu.10/11/2008 9:27:18 PM
