Based on a 20-foot (6.1-metres) shipping container, the Sun MD is capable of supporting up to 50 teraflops of compute performance or three petabytes of disk capacity in a heterogeneous environment. Sun MD takes 1/10th the time to deploy a bricks-and-mortar datacentre. Sun MD, with its watercooled design, also delivers over 40 per cent lower cooling costs, independent of payload, as compared to a typical datacentre.
Commenting on the occasion, R. Vasudevan, vice president, enterprise solutions, Emerson Network Power India, said, "This partnership is aimed at combining the expertise of both Sun Microsystems and Emerson to provide customers with a world class solution in the datacentre space."
Peter Chadford, director, sales development, APAC and emerging regions, Sun Microsystems, said, "Sun Modular Datacentre radically changes the way in which datacentre capacity is deployed. In emerging markets, there are many companies who are experiencing explosive IT growth, but are unable to meet demand due to infrastructure limitations. We are pleased to partner with Emerson which is a technology leader in business critical continuity space worldwide to offer the Sun MD as an appropriate solution not only for customers who are out of datacentre space and need to add capacity rapidly but also for those who want to deploy their IT infrastructure anywhere worldwide — or be able to redeploy to new locations as requirements change. In addition to the performance boost, costs savings and the eco features of Sun MD, two critical aspects that I believe will influence a CIO's purchasing decision towards the solution is the durability and mobility of the Sun Modular Datacentre."
The Sun MD is enhanced with up to eight high-density racks, a water-based cooling system and shock absorption technology. Designed to house a payload of 19-inch rackmount servers, storage, telecommunications and networking equipment, the Sun MD can be installed permanently or repurposed and relocated to meet ever-changing business demands.
Each Sun MD hosts one 12.5-kW rack for network and system management equipments and six (D20) or seven (S20) 25-kW-capable general-purpose racks for servers, storage or other equipment. The Sun MD enables customers to preserve their capital by allowing customers to buy data centre capacity in smaller, more precise increments in the amount they need, when they need and where they need it. |
