Philips Unveils First Android MP4 Player

The rumours about a new MP4 portable media player (PMP) from Philips are true! The GoGear Connect player runs Google's open source OS, supports WiFi and has an 8.1 cm (3.2-inch) touchscreen. Philips said: “The new Philips GoGear Connect takes the next step for MP4 players, being the first to offer the full Android experience. It comes pre-installed with Google Mobile applications and more than 100,000 apps can be downloaded from the Android Market.” The gadget will be available in Western Europe, USA and China from October this year.

YouTube Turns Videos Into Revenue

Infosys BPO suffered a minor jolt when Deutsche Bank decided to move a portion of its back office processes away from Infosys BPO to its captive centre in the city. With an investment of Rs 100 crore and leveraging the skills of Tech Mahindra and Mahindra Satyam, Mahindra Group is consolidating its IT infrastructure and applications across various businesses. At present, the IT infrastructure of the group (with nearly 100 companies in its fold) is scattered across different cities and countries. According to a report by The Economic Times, the IT infrastructure is being consolidated in three large data centres — a primary data centre housing all software and applications, a nearshore disaster recovery centre and another recovery centre located in Chennai.

Cisco Restructuring Its Operations Along Industry Lines

Networking company Cisco is going to reorganise its operations worldwide along industry lines in a phased manner across different regions. The restructuring will be especially significant to India, where it is being implemented this month, because of the proximity to its second global headquarters in Bengaluru, reports The Economic Times. “If there is a business problem, the India arm will work with the globalisation centre east (GCE) to check if there are matching capabilities that exist,” said Naresh Wadhwa, president and country manager, Cisco India.

New Telcos May Be Allowed To Surrender 2G Spectrum

Telecom Commission may allow new telecom operators to surrender 2G spectrum, which they had bagged in January 2008 at the rate of Rs 1,651 crore for pan-India operations. The move comes after some of the telcos including Swan Telecom approached DoT to inform they are struggling to roll out services and would rather avail of refund of the money they paid two years ago, reports The Economic Times.

Wireshark 1.4.0 Doesn’t Support Windows 2000

Wireshark, the popular network protocol analyzer, has released its version 1.4.0, which not only fixes several bugs found in previous versions, but also addresses various memory leaks in the application. The latest version features preliminary Python scripting support and the ability to play RTP streams directly from the RTP Analysis, reports The Open. Notably, version 1.4 no longer includes support for Windows 2000 systems. According to the developers, “Wireshark 1.4 does not support Windows 2000. Please use Wireshark 1.2 or 1.0 on those systems.”
