New Policy To Address Disparity In FDI, Technology And Access Device

Samsung Likely To Sell 25 Million Smartphones This Year

Samsung, which earlier announced it would treble smartphone sales this year to 18 million units, now expects to sell up to 25 million smartphones this year owing to the popularity of its Android-powered Galaxy S model. J.K. Shin, head, mobile communications division, Samsung, stated: "Our smartphone shipments will easily surpass 20 million units this year, thanks to strong sales of recently released Galaxy S," as reported by Reuters.

ZTE Wins Rs 300-Crore BSNL Contract

Recently China’s Huawei won a plum 3G network equipment contract from Tata Teleservices. Now to join the fray, Shenzhen-based ZTE Corp. has bagged a Rs 300-crore contract from BSNL to supply WiMax systems for its broadband rollout. According to The Economic Times, the Indian government's fears about Chinese telecoms gear posing a national security threat are on the wane.

ID Proof Must For New Mobile Users: China

As per a new rule by the Chinese government, mobile phone users will now have to produce identification before purchasing a new number. While locals in China need to produce their ID, foreigners will have to register with their passports or other ID proof in order to purchase new mobile phone connections, mentioned China Daily. Till now, both local and foreigners could buy mobile handsets from the countless roadside shops without producing any identification, reports Business Standard. There are more than 800 million mobile phone users in China, of which only 60 per cent remain identified.

New Telcos May Be Allowed To Surrender 2G Spectrum

Telecom Commission may allow new telecom operators to surrender 2G spectrum, which they had bagged in January 2008 at the rate of Rs 1,651 crore for pan-India operations. The move comes after some of the telcos including Swan Telecom approached DoT to inform they are struggling to roll out services and would rather avail of refund of the money they paid two years ago, reports The Economic Times.

This may pave the way for equal moves from its counterparts.
