Apple Boosts Employee Count By 48 Per Cent

Apple Inc has increased the number of workers on its payroll by 48 per cent in the 2008 fiscal year. As per Indiatimes, in a Securities and Exchange filing, the company has said that it had employed 32,000 full-time workers and 3,100 temporary employees and contractors as of Sept 27. In fiscal 2007, Apple claimed 21,600 full-time employees and 2,100 temporary and contract workers.

Ex-MS Executive Is New Yahoo Media Chief

Yahoo Inc has appointed a former Microsoft Corp manager Jeff Dossett to lead its US media business as two more executives left the beleaguered Internet business. As per Indiatimes, Dossett, who will report to Hilary Schneider, executive vice president of Yahoo US, was an executive producer and general manager for Microsoft's MSN Media Network.

Intel To Cut Its VMware Stake

Intel Corp is cutting its stake in business software maker VMware Inc in half. As per Indiatimes, Intel has recently sold one million shares in the virtualization software maker and plans to sell another 3.75 million VMware shares on the open market "approximately". The sales amount to 4.75 million of the 9.5 million shares that Intel bought in VMware in July 2007.

Wipro May Buy Citi's Tech Arm

Financial services major Citigroup has started talks to sell its subsidiary, Citi Technology Services (CTS), formerly called Citos. As per Indiatimes, Wipro is believed to be front-runner for the bank’s captive technology and infrastructure outsourcing arm. The $150 million deal is likely to be announced by the end of third quarter.

Intel, AMD May Bring 32nm Chip, 22nm Process, Respectively

Intel and AMD, the cut neck competitors in processor segment, reportedly will unveil the details of their upcoming processor technologies at the IEEE International Electron Devices Meeting, which will begin on 15 December 2008 in San Francisco. As per ITvoir, Intel will give a preview of their 32nm processors that are currently codenamed Westmere. AMD will team up with IBM to bring in 22nm process to design SRAM cell that is termed as 'smallest functional SRAM cell ever made'.

Microsoft Releases Update For Mac 2008

Microsoft Corp. has announced to release an update for Microsoft Office for Mac 2008. The company will bring the most current version that is in use to updated 12.1.4. As per ITvoir, the update is announced to fix a very specific problem that was caused by the last update. The enhanced version 12.1.4 is launched to address a calendar issue in versions of Microsoft Entourage that were updated with the Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac 12.1.3 Update.

Cambridge Tech Cautious On Buys

As it decides to dilute 17 per cent by issuing warrants (30 Lakh warrants) to raise Rs 30 crore, Cambridge Technology Enterprises has decided to be cautious in making further acquisitions in the backdrop of the economic slowdown. As per The Hindu Business Line, the company, which has just completed the acquisition of the US-based Protege for $11-million, saw good opportunities as it could bag firms for lesser valuations. At present, it is in talks with five companies – three in the US and two in India.

Mformation Sues RIM For Patent Infringement

Panasonic May Buy Sanyo Electric

Japanese electronics maker Panasonic Corp is in talks with Goldman Sachs and two other major shareholders of Sanyo Electric Co Ltd to buy a controlling stake in its smaller rival. As per Indiatimes, Sanyo's three main shareholders are Daiwa Securities SMBC, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp and Goldman Sachs. The combined entity would be Japan's largest electronics maker in revenue terms, surpassing Hitachi Ltd.

Symantec Planning Job Cuts

Security software maker Symantec is planning to lay off an undetermined number of workers before the end of the year as part of a cost-cutting move in the economic downturn. As per Indiatimes, the company, which gave guidance this week that was short of analyst expectations, plans a 4.5 per cent cost savings in its workforce budget and will reduce the headcount enough to accomplish that.

Intel To Open 11 RMA Centres

Intel India is beefing up its support infrastructure and plans to open 11 RMA centres around the country within the next year. As per CRN, the company has already set up two centres in Mumbai and Bengaluru. Steve Dallman, VP, sales and marketing group and general manager, worldwide reseller channel organisation, Intel, said that the decision to set up these new centres has been taken in view of the increasing cost of transportation in sending back and forth the repaired products.

EA To Slash Workforce After Reporting Loss

Electronic Arts has cut its forecast for the fiscal year and said that it will slash its workforce 6 per cent, or about 580 jobs, to reduce costs. As per Cnet, the Redwood City, California-based company posted a net second-quarter loss of $310 million, or 97 cents, compared with a loss of $195 million, or 62 cents per share, for the year-ago period.

Apple Hires Top IBM Chip Designer

One of IBM's top chip executives has agreed to join Apple as a senior executive, but he might have to fight off his former employer first. As per Cnet, Mark Papermaster, until recently IBM's vice president of microprocessor technology development, plans to join Apple early November. However, IBM is suing Papermaster to prevent him from joining Apple and divulging trade secrets related to IBM's Power chips and server products, according to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.

Google Brings Text Messaging To Online Chat

Google is expanding the instant-messaging feature built into Gmail so people can use it to send text messages to their contacts' phones. As per Cnet, to use the feature, people can click on a chat window's settings to send a text message with SMS or type a contact's phone number in the chat contact search box. The feature is experimental, available only to those who opt to use it through the Gmail Labs settings.

Motorola To Cut 3,000 Jobs

Motorola Inc. slumped in New York trading after forecasting profit that missed analysts' estimates, pushing the mobile-phone maker to cut 3,000 jobs and delay plans to break itself up. As per Indiatimes, Greg Brown, Co-CEO, Motorola, said that the job cuts, scheduled for the next few quarters, account for about 5 per cent of the total and are on top of more than 9,000 since the start of 2007. He added that the job cuts are part of the company's plan to save $800 million next year, and more than two-thirds of them will happen in the phone unit.

Yahoo! and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL unit are looking at each other's books to figure out how much money they could make together and where costs can be saved, indicating a merger may finally be on the way. According to a person familiar with the talks, the two companies have engaged in 'meaningful' due diligence about a possible combination for the past couple of weeks. Under the deal Yahoo! and Time Warner have discussed, Yahoo! would fold AOL's content and advertising business into its own operations, and Time Warner would get a stake in the combined company.

BSNL Offers Discount On Broadband Subscription
